Throughout the Year
Pittenweem is becoming known as a small town where a variety of
art and craft can be seen and bought throughout the year. Several
small galleries and shops have opened in the past few years, showing
changing exhibitions of mainly Scottish work. It is also the home
of the Scottish Collection of Outsider Art or as Joyce Laing the
curator prefers to call it, "Art Extraordinary".
What attracts artists to Pittenweem is the stunning location offering
endless subject material, the clear air and vibrant colours, and
not least, the highly successful annual Pittenweem Arts Festival.
Planning for the forthcoming Festival starts as soon as the last
one finishes, with invited artists and commissioned plays etc having
been arranged well before that. The 30 or so resident "Pittenweem
Artists" have held group shows in the Byre Theatre for the
last two Christmases and more recently an exhibition was hosted
by the Peter Potter Gallery in Haddington. Most of the artists are
full time and exhibit widely across Britain and Europe.
