KAREN TROTTER

My art is an expression of a relationship with my local surroundings in North Queensferry, Fife, and is coloured by memories of extended sea journeys by kayak. The process begins with daily walks along the fringes of the Forth estuary, collecting treasures in the shadow of the iconic Forth Bridges. Arranging and rearranging these found objects in my studio, I imagine myself as an archaeologist, or anthropologist, cataloguing and recording an inventory of man-made artefacts, bird skulls, driftwood, and plastic detritus.

Whether an acrylic seascape, painted on sea battered marine-ply, an assemblage of bottle-tops and carbon rods, or an etching of gannets or puffins, I strive to draw together many strands in a constant weaving, and repurposing, of objects and ideas in a littoral medley of my tidal passion.

Recently, I have happened on novel printmaking techniques, necessitated by the temporary lockdowns of the Fife Dunfermline Printmakers Workshop, where I have access to traditional etching presses.

The unexpected journey into unfamiliar processes has enriched my understanding of mark-making and printmaking, facilitating new pathways along which to progress the flow of my work.
