CAROLINE FINLAY

Burntisland, Fife. Graduated, Grays School of Art, Aberdeen. The unpredictable nature and untamed beauty of the coastline, in particular the wild and remote Scottish and Hebridean shoreline is Caroline’s constant source of inspiration.

Designs are informed by the coastal textures, colours, shapes and light. From sea-tumbled pebbles to repetitive tidal marks, Caroline finds the calming influence of being by the sea very creative. Caroline uses Silver and Vitreous Enamel to make her contemporary jewellery. Enamel allows her to introduce colour into her work and she uses a palette that echoes her inspiration. Caroline explores jewellery making and enamelling techniques to create mark making and form.

Each stage is made by hand; she prefers the fluidity this gives her work; nothing is identical. She enjoys the connection this gives her with each piece and the spontaneity that experimenting with enamel allows. More recently Caroline has introduced printmaking into her practice. Her etchings, screenprints and monoprints are inspired by her natural surroundings as well as her jewellery designs and she is finding increasing connections and overlaps between the two disciplines.

Caroline is an established maker, having exhibited her jewellery in the UK and abroad. This will be her fourth year at Pittenweem.
