FESTIVAL EVENTS: A CELEBRATION OF ART AND COMMUNITY


The Pittenweem Arts Festival is not just an exhibition of stunning artworks but a vibrant celebration filled with events for everyone. From dawn till dusk, the village of Pittenweem buzzes with activity, offering a range of events that cater to art lovers of all ages. We are delighted to extend our events programme this year with the support from the Fife Strategic Events Fund.

 

OUR FREE ARTIST EVENTS

AUTOMATED ART - Venue 61, Daily (except Tuesday) 2-3pm

Create your own artwork with Ian Graham's exciting collection of drawing machines... No artistic ability required!

ADVENTURES IN COLOUR - Venue 21, Sat 3rd & 10th 3pm

Sarah Knox will talk about working en plein air and in her studio. In a demo, she will explore the expressive and abstract qualities of watercolour and talk about her distinctive oil technique.

ATMOSPHERIC PAINTING WITH ROLLERS - Venue 89, Wed 7th 2-4pm, Fri 9th 10-12noon

Join Anne Barclay to have a go at using printmaking rollers to create atmosphere in a painting. Wear old clothes or bring a pinny! Suitable for all ages. 

LOUISE TURNBULL TALK - Venue 72, Mon 5th, 2.30pm

Louise will give a brief talk on her journey as an artist, influences, inspirations and processes, such as the use of sketchbooks, before opening up to questions.

STORIES IN THE STONES WITH NEIL PATERSON - Venue 81, Sat 3rd - Tues 6th, 2pm

This is a family event. A talk about the inspirations behind my stone carving exhibition, with some storytelling of the tales that have influenced the compositions. Attendees can expect audience interaction!

COASTAL PATHS: ARTIST TALK WITH JOANNA FOSTER - Venue 55, Tue 6th, 2pm

Join Joanna for a behind-the-scenes look into the process of developing a series of 'water drawings' along the Fife coastline. 

MAKING PAINT FROM THE EARTH - Venue 13, Sun 4th & Thurs 8th, 1.30pm

Join 2023 Henderson Bursary winner Siobhan McLaughlin for a workshop on how to create paint from the earth. Includes optional participation to grind rocks for pigment making. Suitable for all. 

FISH SHOAL TAPESTRIES - Venue 36, drop-in any time over the Festival

Visit Claudia Maldonado in her venue any day during the Festival. She will explain the process of up-cycling the rubber of inner tubes to convert them into Fish Shoal Tapestries.

ARTISTS' COFFEE MORNING - REGISTERED EXHIBITING ARTISTS ONLY

First time exhibiting artists are welcome to join us for an informal coffee morning on the opening day of the Pittenweem Arts Festival. Get to know the other artists and the Festival Board and learn how you can make the most of your Festival experience.

INTRODUCTION TO SCREEN PRINTING

Come along  to this all day drop-in session and have a go at screen printing, with Mobile Print Studio. Using pre-made designs you can quickly get a taste for this fun and addictive process. Layer things up in different colours for a jazzy and unique piece to take home! All ages and abilities welcome.

INVITED ARTISTS PAULINE BURBIDGE & CHARLES POULSEN: GUIDED GALLERY TALK

Charles and Pauline will conduct a guided talk around their gallery space at the Old Town Hall, talking through their displayed artworks of sculpture, drawings and textiles, and about their general practice. Q&A will be encouraged throughout. An ideal opportunity to meet and engage with our incredible Invited Artists.

TALES FROM THE CAVE

Join storytellers and singers in the spooky surroundings of Pittenweem’s spectacular Cave. This Festival tradition has been revived by the Community Library, with exciting tales popular with local children. Back by popular demand and with all new tales to tell! 

Juice and biscuits provided. Wear warm clothes as the Cave can be chilly. Children aged 7 and over may attend unaccompanied, with parent/carer permission. 

Tickets available from the Festival Office or from Pittenweem Library from 15th July.

NEUK NIGHTS PRESENTS: 
GOOD GUY HANK

From the harmonious Heartlands of Scotland and the musical metropolis of Melbourne, Australia, Good Guy Hank bring all of the heartbreak, joy and everything in-between with blistering country guitar, lightning mandolin, virtuoso fiddle playing and three-part harmonies galore! Influences range from Hank Williams, Elbow, Lucinda Williams to Drive By Truckers, Gillian Welsh and Calexico.

PRIORY SINGERS: 
SCOTLAND AT NIGHT

Priory Singers, the East Neuk’s own chamber choir, return to the Festival! Under the direction of its accomplished and talented Musical Director, Dr Sarah Moerman, the choir will perform a varied selection of pieces, both traditional and contemporary, and including works by some of Scotland’s finest composers, including Macmillan, Maxwell Davies and others. 

Tickets will be available from the Festival Office and from choir members from 15th July or on the door.

CYANOTYPE CREATIONS WITH KIT MARTIN

Join Kit in making your very own blue and white cyanotype prints in the sun. Discover more about this photographic printing process which doesn't need a camera! All materials provided but bring something small and flat if you like (e.g a stencil, leaf, feather - not bigger than A5).

EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING WITH DOT BLACK

A relaxed and fun experimental drawing workshop using natural forms as inspiration. Suitable for all levels of ability, we will use a range of approaches and techniques, often working large scale. Dot has a wealth of teaching experience, always passionate and enthusiastic in helping others to explore their creative potential.

KIDS' MUSICAL THEATRE EXPERIENCE + PERFORMANCE

Spend an afternoon singing and dancing! Learn familiar songs from famous musicals and we’ll add some movement. Family and friends can then join for a short performance at 5.45pm. 

Suitable for age 8+. Dress comfortably and bring lots of water.

This is a chance for adults only to try out this exciting, challenging and rewarding activity. Master sculptor, Susheila Jaimeson, brings this extended workshop, which allows participants to take their carvings to the next level in terms of detail and refining. Everyone will go home dusty and happy and carrying their own unique piece of sculpture for outdoor or indoor display.

PLEIN AIR COMPETITION

If you, like us, are inspired by the light and the atmosphere of our village during the Festival, why not join in our plein air competition! Bring along your art equipment and pop into the Box Office between 9.30 - 10am to have your canvas stamped for entry, before setting off to your chosen vantage point to capture the beauty or ambience of Pittenweem. Your artworks will then be judged by Exhibiting Artist and Sky Landscape Artist of the Year semi-finalist, Tony Griffin, and  there's a chance to win a fantastic prize.

MAKE A MEMORY BOX WITH NATALIE SAINT-MARTIN

Make a memory box full of creativity and special things, with artist Natalie Saint-Martin. Bring a cherished item – a little toy, a special object, or a picture, for example – and Natalie will help you to build and decorate a beautiful keepsake treasure. 

Suitable for ages 5-14. Under 7s accompanied by an adult.

ARTISTS BOOKS: AN INTRODUCTION & WORKSHOP WITH JOANNA FOSTER

Learn about the book as a form of art. Introducing a variety of folding and binding techniques to make your own concertina sketchbook, Japanese journal and folded zine. Bookbinding materials and papers provided.

IN-CONVERSATION WITH CALUM STEVENSON

In 2021, Calum Stevenson became the youngest winner of the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Since then, Calum's work has been acquired by numerous public and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh and the Kia Oval in London. Hear Calum talk about his experiences on the hit show and how he approaches his practice.  

Preceded by a screening of Callum Rice's ‘Flourish, Portrait of a Provost’, which offers an intimate study of Calum's artistic process while he painted Lord Provost, Philip Braat. Followed by an audience Q&A.

IMPRESSION & IMPRINT: MONOPRINT WORKSHOP WITH JOANNA FOSTER

Learn how to print from natural materials. Please collect and bring a few leaves, flowers, fishing rope, feathers, shells… these will be the basis for prints developed in the workshop.

DRESS UP! 

This dystopian comedy about a waste-collecting robot left to clean up the ruined remains of an abandoned Earth is one of Pixar’s most heartfelt and boundary-pushing creations. WALL-E is a masterclass in pure visual storytelling with a lovable, Chaplin-esque protagonist at its heart’s centre. Get inventive with your own trash at home and come along as a robot… prizes for the best dressed up for grabs!

FILM: SCOTLAND REDISTILLED: THE LONG HAUL + PANEL 

Invited Artist and local photographer and filmmaker, Liam Dickson, has chronicled life at sea onboard a modern-day fishing vessel. Scotland ReDistilled is a heritage project connecting people with the stories that shaped an industry or cultural movement.

Followed by a panel featuring Liam and fishermen past and present, who will regale us with their stories of working along this mercurial coastline.

CLYDEBUILT PUPPET THEATRE PRESENTS: BEACHCOMBER STORIES + WORKSHOP

Join whimsical characters who will thrill both young and old with their tales from the deep. A king who tried to stop the waves; an old fisherman who catches a magical Golden Lobster; and a VERY ungrateful crocodile, a lively character with an appetite for lunch! Clydebuilt use unusual materials to realise their creations, including a rope, a trunk, and even a dry sandy desert.

For an extra £2, join us for a shadow puppet theatre workshop and see your creations come to life! Both the show and the workshop are suitable for ages 3-9. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

LITTLE ARCHITECTS: TRANSFORM PITTENWEEM

Drop in to our interactive workshop for children (and grownups!) to explore Pittenweem’s rich architectural history. Through hands on activities, get creative and transform spaces, blending past and present, and learn about the village’s heritage in a fun, engaging way. Discover the magic of Pittenweem’s buildings - just bring your imagination!

This is a drop-in workshop from 14.30-17.00. Stay as long as you like with your ticket.

Suitable for ages 8+. Bring water with you.

NEUK NIGHTS PRESENTS: THE LONG ROAD + ROBYN SMITH 

With exposure to many genres of music growing up, Dunfermline-born, Robyn, leans towards Americana, blending Scottish melodies with the roots of country, soft folk, and the occasional flare of 70s rock. Her music creates a unique sound that captivates audiences and transcends genres.

Drawing inspiration from folk, alternative and heartland rock, The Long Road craft a sound that bridges the past and the present. Formed in early 2023, this 5-piece are hot off the realease of their third single.

RECYCLING: CRAFTS WITH PITTENWEEM LIBRARY

Join staff from the Pittenweem Library at the Church Hall on James Street for a fun and interactive craft session using discarded items found around Pittenweem. Expect lots of shells and stones! Get creative and take your craft home with you.

Suitable for 5-10 year olds. Under 7s accompanied by an adult. Adults go free.

DYNAMIC DRAWING: SOFT PASTELS WITH HAYLEY MILLS

Enjoy an afternoon of dynamic drawing with soft pastel. This workshop is ideal if you want to get back to drawing or improve your current level. The class will be mixed level, with some basic drawing experience required. Bring your own materials and a bottle of water.
