Deborah first exhibited work at the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Academy at the age of 14. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art with honours in 1987, before working for both The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland.
She then professionally demonstrated art and drawing materials for an international art materials company. Since then she has been painting full time in her studios overlooking the Firth of Tay and Pittenweem in the East Neuk of Fife.
Deborah’s paintings are informed by her love of Scottish landscape, yet her work stands clearly apart from that of her contemporaries. Through her unique and highly distinctive technique, she has developed a strong and recognisable signature style, constructing remarkable, shimmering mixed media pieces, which have become highly collected throughout the UK.
“I enjoy all aspects of creating a painting, from sketching the stunning Scottish countryside, to priming the surfaces on which I paint. Squeezing paint from the tubes and watching it glisten on the palette, applying it in swathes before varnishing, framing and seeing finished on a gallery wall - every stage gives me a thrill”.
“Phillips' jewel light mixed media paintings give a glittering glow to the gallery”
