Bjørn Rune Lie is a Norwegian artist and illustrator based in Cellardyke. Experimentation is an important part of his practice and his “flower studies” are a vehicle for him to explore as many processes and forms of mark making as possible.
Combining techniques like paper marbling and balloon printing, rubber stamps and soft pastels he creates strange and otherworldly botanical illustrations that have an almost sculptural quality to them. Although the finished pieces look highly polished, the process is all about facilitating happy accidents and the outcomes are very unpredictable.
Bjorn also finds great inspiration in the simple and utilitarian architecture of the East Neuk; the old stone walls, cottages with crow stepped gables, the crumbling sheds and the tarred net lofts. He loves to explore ever new ways of capturing and distilling these into his bold and graphic visual language which, despite the bright and poppy colours, often betrays a slight feeling of unease.
What untold stories might be buried in those old buildings?
