EILEEN HERLIHY

Eileen Herlihy works under the name “Entwined Florals”, representing her interest and ease in exploring different professional and creative opportunities that working with floral and natural material presents.

Having originally studied Fine Art and Community Art, after which and via a circuitous route, Eileen worked in television and events for nearly 30 years.  Looking to find a way back to a more hands-on and physical making practice, Eileen re-trained in floristry from 2019 realising its potential for multi-disciplinary working and exploration of ideas.

Eileen utilises the skills, traditions and artistry of floristry and is inspired by stories, histories and ideas generated by plants and flowers.  These, combined with Eileen’s background in fine art, her experience and interest in events, festivals, collaborative working and the possibilities of interactive-art all led to “Filamentous (our kind multiplies)” a new living-art installation being created especially for the 2024 Pittenweem Art Festival.

ABOUT 'FILAMENTOUS'

“Filamentous (our kind multiplies)” is a living installation to be created especially for the 2024 Pittenweem Art Festival.

Using natural materials and additional fungi shapes, Filamentous will create the sense, imaginings, feelings and smells of a wooded place; as well as the mycorrhizal network that discreetly and quietly communicates and connects life in the earth.

Showing at the same Festival venue, the installation is a response to the current artwork of Shelley Jupitus; and like Shelley’s current work, it is inspired by “Mushrooms”, the 1959 poem of Sylvia Plath.

As well as being something to experience, the installation will grow and develop during the Festival as visitors are asked to interact and add additional filaments to it.

  • adding a filament - to make a connection.
  • adding to the installation - to become part of the installation.
  • adding to the Festival - to become part of the Pittenweem Art Festival.
