GILL SMITH

I have always painted and knew from a young age that I would like to go to art college. While at Dundee Art College I used both gouache and oil paint as this was what was recommended for design and painting. When I left art college I worked with people who were mentally ill and through this experience I decided to train as an Art Therapist. I attended Herts College of art and whilst there became friendly with an illustrator who introduced me to watercolour. I immediately became enamoured with the transparency and fluidity of the medium.

My paintings are rarely planned they tend to evolve as I go on. My home is full of objects that feature in my still lifes. My small colony garden is also full of flowers that I love to paint. In winter I spend a considerable time scouring flower shops and supermarkets for flowers that inspire me. I often work on a number of paintings as it gives me time to think about what I want to do next. I can also have time to come back to them with a fresh eye.
